Tour Overview

Experiencing South America’s most iconic archaeological site does not require a multi day mountain trek or an overnight stay in the Urubamba Valley. Montavia Travel’s full day excursion delivers a comprehensive, expert led journey to Machu Picchu, starting and ending directly at your hotel doorstep in Cusco.

Your morning begins before dawn as you depart the high Andes and travel down through the Sacred Valley. Boarding the train at Ollantaytambo, you trace the winding course of the Urubamba River, observing a striking ecological transition from dry highland peaks to the dense vegetation of the Amazonian brow. Upon reaching Aguas Calientes, a short shuttle ride ascends the steep zigzags of Mountain Valley to the entry gates of the citadel.

This itinerary is ideal for first-time visitors to Peru, tight schedules, solo travelers, couples, and small groups who prefer an organized, single day adventure. The physical demand remains moderate overall, primary physical activity centers on navigating uneven stone steps, narrow pathways, and terrace staircases within the ruins. Because Machu Picchu sits at 2,430 meters (7,972 feet)—substantially lower than Cusco’s 3,400 meters (11,152 feet) most travelers find the air noticeably richer in oxygen once they arrive at the site.

By booking directly with Montavia Travel, a licensed local operator based in Cusco, you secure precise transit schedules, private ground vehicles, licensed official guides, and guaranteed entry permits. The optimal months for this excursion run during the dry season from April through October, though daily departures run year-round.

Detailed Itinerary

Day 1 - Cusco to Machu Picchu Citadel Excursion and Return

Your day begins with a private hotel pickup in Cusco between 3:30 AM and 4:00 AM. Boarding a comfortable private vehicle, you depart the sleeping city and drive west through the Sacred Valley toward Ollantaytambo. As dawn breaks across the valley floor, your route reveals ancient agricultural terraces carved into the mountain walls and early morning light hitting the Urubamba River.

By 6:10 AM, you arrive at the Ollantaytambo rail station to board the 6:40 AM train down to Aguas Calientes. Settling into your seat, you follow the river downstream along the valley floor. Over the 90 minute journey, the surrounding landscape shifts dramatically: dry mountain scrub gives way to lush ferns, orchids, and bamboo foliage characteristic of the high jungle cloud forest.

The train pulls into Aguas Calientes station at approximately 8:10 AM. Your Montavia Travel guide meets you on the platform and assists you onto the dedicated shuttle bus by 8:30 AM. The bus negotiates the sharp switchback turns up the steep face of the mountain, arriving at the main entrance gate of the Machu Picchu Historic Sanctuary around 9:00 AM.

Passing through the entry checkpoint, you enter the stone complex for a comprehensive two hour guided walk. Your guide navigates the upper and lower sectors, stopping at critical structural landmarks including the Sun Temple, the Intihuatana stone, the Sacred Plaza, and the Royal Quarter. You will learn how Incan stonemasons fitted multi ton granite blocks without mortar, how underground drainage systems prevented slope erosion during heavy rains, and how architectural alignments tracked solstices.

Following your guided loop around 11:30 AM, you have personal time to view the central plazas, take photos, or if you secured specialized advance permits take on the steep climb up Huayna Picchu Peak or Machu Picchu Mountain.

By 1:00 PM, you take the shuttle bus back down to Aguas Calientes. You will have free time from 1:30 PM to 3:00 PM to select a local restaurant for lunch along the riverbanks or browse the artisan market. At 3:40 PM, you report to the rail station for your 4:12 PM return train to Ollantaytambo, arriving at 5:50 PM. Your private driver waits at the station exit to take you back up through the Sacred Valley, dropping you directly at your Cusco hotel between 8:00 PM and 8:30 PM.

We highly recommend you reserve the Vistadome Observatory train for a once in a lifetime experience.

CLOTHING

EQUIPMENT

Yes, this is one of the most popular and efficient ways to experience the citadel. By starting early and using the regional train network, you can spend several hours exploring the sanctuary and still make it back to Cusco the same evening.

Most departures begin with a hotel pickup between 3:30 and 4:30 in the morning. Depending on your assigned train schedule, you can expect to return to Cusco somewhere between 8:00 and 10:00 at night.

Pack your original passport, a rain jacket, sun protection, a small daypack, and comfortable walking shoes. Students should bring a valid university ID to present at the entrance, as it may qualify you for reduced pricing.

Since Machu Picchu sits at a lower elevation than Cusco, most travelers find breathing easier once they arrive at the sanctuary. That said, spending at least two days in Cusco beforehand to acclimate is strongly recommended, since the tour itself begins at Cusco's higher altitude.

Entry tickets and train seats are limited and tend to sell out quickly, especially during the dry season. Booking two to three months ahead is the safest way to secure your preferred entry time and train service.

Breakfast at your hotel is included, along with snacks and bottled water during the day. Lunch is not included, but there is time built into the schedule to eat in Aguas Calientes before the return journey.

Yes, the standard itinerary is manageable for most children, since the majority of the day involves transportation rather than strenuous activity. Families with younger children should keep in mind the early start time and the length of the day when deciding if it's the right fit.

Montavia Travel manages every detail of the day  pickup, train tickets, shuttle transfers, entry, and guiding  so nothing is left for you to coordinate on the ground. Our guides specialize in Andean history, our logistics are built around real train and shuttle schedules rather than best-case estimates, and our support team stays responsive if anything needs adjusting. For a day with this many moving parts, that reliability makes a real difference.
