Why We Currently Do Not Offer the Classic Inca Trail

At Montavia Travel, we believe responsible tourism includes being clear about which experiences we offer and how we operate.

For this reason, we currently do not offer the Classic Inca Trail (also known as the Inca Trail) as one of our regular trekking programs in Peru.

About the Classic Inca Trail

The Classic Inca Trail is a high‑altitude trekking route that leads to the Historic Sanctuary of Machu Picchu. It is a protected natural and cultural area, regulated by Peruvian authorities.

Access to the Classic Inca Trail is subject to rules established by the Peruvian State, including daily capacity limits and the requirement to use authorized tourism operators.

For official and up‑to‑date information about the Classic Inca Trail, Machu Picchu, permits, and regulations, please consult the websites of the competent Peruvian authorities and licensed operators.

Our operational decision

Our decision not to offer the Classic Inca Trail at this time is based on our internal operational criteria, including logistics, traveler support, environmental management, and service quality.

We prefer not to commercialize this experience until we can design an operation that fully meets our internal standards. This decision:

• Is not a statement that the route is unsafe

• Is not a judgment on other operators who offer this trek

• Is not an official assessment of infrastructure, regulation, or destination conditions

We respect the regulatory framework established by Peruvian authorities and the work of authorized tourism operators providing services on the Classic Inca Trail and within the Historic Sanctuary of Machu Picchu.

Safety and inherent risks of high‑altitude trekking

The Classic Inca Trail is a high‑altitude trekking route that, by its nature, involves inherent risks, such as uneven terrain, weather changes, altitude, and demanding physical effort.

There are reports of accidents and fatalities associated with trekking activities in the Cusco and Machu Picchu region. However, there are no consolidated official statistics that allow calculation of a specific mortality rate for the Classic Inca Trail.

For this reason, Montavia Travel does not publish or use estimated figures on fatalities or mortality rates related to this route.

Our decision not to offer the Classic Inca Trail should not be interpreted as a statement about a specific level of risk, danger, or accident rate for this route.

Our commitment

Montavia Travel focuses on offering destinations and experiences where we can manage the trip in an integrated way, in line with our current operational standards.

We will continue to monitor regulatory, operational, and tourism‑management developments related to the Classic Inca Trail and the Historic Sanctuary of Machu Picchu. If in the future we consider that we can operate this route in compliance with our internal criteria, we will evaluate adding it to our programs.

Is the Classic Inca Trail unsafe?

No. Our decision not to offer the Classic Inca Trail is not based on a claim that the route is unsafe. It is an internal operational and service‑level decision.

Will Montavia Travel offer the Classic Inca Trail in the future?

It is possible. We continuously evaluate our operations and the regulatory and tourism environment. If in the future we consider that we can operate this route in line with our internal standards, we will reconsider.

Are you criticizing Peruvian authorities or other travel agencies?

No. We respect the work of Peruvian authorities and authorized tourism operators. This text reflects only our internal operational policy.
