Tour Overview

This 4 day luxury expedition across the Andes is engineered for travelers who prioritize high-end comfort alongside factual, historical exploration. Operating exclusively through Montavia Travel, this route carefully paces your exposure to high altitudes. You start at 11,152 feet (3,400 meters) in Cusco, drop into the lower Urubamba Valley, and finalize your primary touring at Machu Picchu, which sits at an accessible 7,972 feet (2,430 meters). This gradual progression minimizes altitude sickness and maximizes your physical energy.

The itinerary appeals directly to luxury seekers, couples, and discerning families wanting a structured yet unhurried schedule. Physical difficulty remains moderate, expect two to three hours of walking on uneven stone steps at archaeological sites. Montavia Travel guarantees precise logistical execution we assign exact departure times to outpace generic tour bus crowds and secure your afternoon entry to the Machu Picchu Citadel for softer lighting and quieter pathways.

The focal point of the trip is your transit aboard the Belmond Hiram Bingham train. Moving away from standard rail options, this service provides premium dining, live entertainment, and direct access to an open-air observation deck as you pass through the dramatic transition from dry high plains to humid cloud forests.

For optimal conditions, we recommend booking this circuit during the Andean dry season from May to October, ensuring clear skies for photography and stable walking trails. You return to four star accommodations each evening, securing proper rest and high quality regional cuisine throughout your stay in Peru.

Detailed Itinerary

Day 1 - Arrive in Cusco and Tour Incan Architecture

Touch down at Alejandro Velasco Astete International Airport (CUZ). A Montavia Travel representative will meet you at the arrivals terminal by 10:00 AM for a private transfer to your four star hotel. Take the remainder of the morning to rest and hydrate, allowing your body to adapt to the 11,152 foot elevation.

At 1:30 PM, your guide will collect you for an afternoon exploration of Cusco’s foundational sites. You start at Qorikancha, observing where colonial Spanish stonework sits directly atop polished Incan walls. By 3:00 PM, a private vehicle drives you up to the fortress of Sacsayhuaman. Here, you can walk alongside massive limestone blocks weighing up to 100 tons. Before the sun sets around 5:00 PM, you stop quickly at Qenqo, Puca Pucará, and the Tambomachay water temple. You will return to your hotel by 5:45 PM, leaving your evening open for an independent dinner in the city plaza.

Depart Cusco at 7:30 AM to beat the primary tourist traffic heading into the Sacred Valley. After a 45 minute drive, you pull over at the Taray lookout at 8:15 AM for clear views of the Urubamba River cutting through agricultural plots. By 9:00 AM, you arrive at the Pisac ruins to walk through the ancient cemetery and terraced hillsides, followed by a brief walk through the local market in the valley below.

At 1:00 PM, stop for an included buffet lunch at a private restaurant in Urubamba, featuring regional ingredients like quinoa and local tubers. By 2:30 PM, you resume the drive toward Moray to examine the deep, bowl like depressions used by the Incas to test crop viability at varying temperatures. At 3:45 PM, you arrive at the Maras salt mines, walking near the thousands of active, terraced salt pools. Conclude the touring day at 5:00 PM in the living Incan town of Ollantaytambo. You will climb the steep steps of the Sun Temple before a private transfer brings you back to your Cusco hotel by 7:30 PM.

Check out of your hotel early. At 7:30 AM, a private driver transfers you to Poroy Station. You board the Belmond Hiram Bingham train at 8:30 AM. Over the next three hours, enjoy the 1920s Pullman style carriages, shifting your time between the dining car for an included gourmet lunch and the open-air observation car. Watch the landscape drop in elevation and shift into dense, green cloud forest.

You pull into Aguas Calientes at 12:30 PM. A dedicated shuttle bus takes you directly up the winding Hiram Bingham highway, reaching the Machu Picchu Sanctuary gates by 1:30 PM. Your private guide will navigate you through the citadel during this less crowded afternoon window. For the next two and a half hours, you inspect the Temple of the Three Windows, the Intihuatana stone, and primary residential sectors. After a 4:00 PM tea time at the Belmond Sanctuary Lodge, you take the shuttle back down to the valley. At 6:30 PM, board the Vistadome train for your return journey. A driver meets you at the station and returns you to your Cusco hotel by 10:30 PM.

Begin your morning with an included breakfast at your hotel, featuring fresh tropical fruits and Andean grains. Checkout is standard at 10:00 AM. Depending on your specific flight schedule, your private driver will arrive three hours prior to your departure time to transport you back to Alejandro Velasco Astete International Airport for your flight out of the Andes.

Note-  Round trip Hiram Bingham Train journey would cost an additional $585 USD per person.

Hotels can be upgraded to five stars upon request.

CLOTHING

EQUIPMENT

Montavia Travel schedules your departure at 7:30 AM on Day 2. This exact timing allows you to reach the Taray lookout and Pisac ruins before the large commercial tour buses arrive.

Cusco sits at 11,152 feet (3,400 meters). We structure this itinerary to help you acclimatize by keeping Day 1 physically light and descending into the lower Sacred Valley and Machu Picchu (7,972 feet / 2,430 meters) for the most strenuous activities.

Yes, lunch is included on two days. On Day 2, you receive a buffet regional lunch in Urubamba at 1:00 PM. On Day 3, a multi course lunch is served aboard the Belmond Hiram Bingham train.

The tour is moderately difficult. You will walk for approximately two to three hours on uneven stone steps and dirt paths. Proper hiking shoes with strong grip are required.

The journey aboard the Belmond Hiram Bingham takes approximately three to three and a half hours, departing at 8:30 AM and arriving in Aguas Calientes around 12:30 PM.

Bring your original physical passport, a daypack under 20 liters, sunblock, insect repellent, a rain jacket, and water in a reusable bottle. Large backpacks and single use plastics are prohibited inside the archaeological site.

Due to strict government daily limits on Machu Picchu permits and the limited seating on the Hiram Bingham train, we require booking at least four to six months in advance, especially for travel between May and October.

Yes. This itinerary includes the standard Machu Picchu Citadel entry permit. If you wish to hike Huayna Picchu or Machu Picchu Mountain, you must request this at the time of booking, as it requires an additional, highly restricted permit.
